I spent several Labor Days under the diving board at Maplewood Pool looking up at the sky. The kids had been going off the high dive all summer and the were in love with the idea of flight. I photographed that freedom. The pool would close. School loomed. The town in New Jersey suffered heavy losses on 9/11 and I was always happy to shoot moments of sheer joy. The kid with the cape was a surprise. But he captured that end of the year, what do I have to lose feeling better than anyone.
