BB King

In 2013, I did a shoot with B.B. King for the Blueberry Family Health Foundation. Afterwards, he was coming to perform at Red Rocks, near my house in Boulder and I told him that I’d love to bring my son. So later that month, I took Jackson, about six-years-old at the time, and we were able to meet Mr. King on his bus before the show.

Jackson was really into knock-knock jokes and immediately started telling B.B. King joke after joke. B.B. King seemed to enjoy it all and was laughing hard, but after five minutes I said, “We should probably go now...” Mr. King asked, “Why? Where are you going?” So Jackson kept feeding him all the jokes. Eventually, we went into the show and it was packed. B.B. King, in the middle of his set, sees Jackson in the audience. He yells out, “There is Jackson, hey Jackson!” and he reaches into his pocket, pulls out a pendant and throws it to my son. It was just like that Coke ad from the 1970s with Mean Joe Greene throwing the kid his jersey. It felt like it was all in slow motion as the pendant arched through the air, the whole audience watching as Jackson caught it and the audience exploded in applause.
