Nobu Matsuhisa

This picture was taken very early on in my LA residency of the 90’s for LA Style. I went to Nobu’s first (and only at the time) restaurant on La Cienega. It was in-between lunch and dinner, and all the chefs were sleeping under the tables. I got the idea to lay Nobu down for a rest, too. I laid out the tablecloth, covered it with rice and some of his most famous dishes. After I got him to lay down and close his eyes….I put the crabs on his chest. I wanted to explore the light changing with the day and with the seasons. Wanted to get my camera smoked inside the grill, and let it disappear inside a pot of steaming fresh peas.
