My time with my subjects is often incredibly brief. A small window into a life I would never get to share without my camera. Kate Spade was just incredibly fun. Painting her toenails at her desk was not on the agenda – but it became one of my favorite shots ever. How do you get that shot? I ask to start shooting before anyone is ready. She laughed as I climbed up on a chair. The rest of the shoot was equally sweet – full of color – and full of life. Often times when I read about such sadness in someone’s life that I shot, I think that I come in through the door of joy. That is how I am wired. Am I blind to the dark side? Maybe in my pictures. But in every life – even lives with incredible sadness – there is also joy. That is why I love this picture even more.
